NEW BEDFORD — The effort to rebuild the three basketball courts at Buttonwood Park has received a $15,000 boost from Southcoast Health.

"Our parks, particularly our urban parks, provide opportunities for local residents to take part in free, healthy activities," said Keith Hovan, president and CEO of Southcoast Health, in a press release. "Parks are a prescription for the community's good health and we are proud to support these much needed renovations at Buttonwood Park."

The effort is part of the Buttonwood on the Move project, which includes the intention to restore the park's tennis courts and improve and expand its walking trails.

Friends of Buttonwood Park set out in the fall to raise $150,000 to rebuild the courts, which had not been updated in more than 30 years. Construction began this spring and is slated to wrap up early next month.
