HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Holyoke Medical Center held a ceremony Monday to mark the halfway point in the construction of their new emergency room and medical office building.
The $22 million addition will expand the current emergency department to 20,000 square feet; which is more than double its current size. The department will have 40 treatment areas, multi-patient trauma rooms, dedicated space for behavioral health and substance abuse patients, and new advanced lifesaving equipment.
The project was initially slated for $12 million, but financing has allowed it to expand along with tax credits.
Monday, Congressman Richard Neal (D-Springfield), as well as state and local officials were invited to sign the last beam to be installed in the new building.
“Massachusetts is known nationally and internationally by the quality of the healthcare we deliver, and Holyoke Hospital is very much a part of that reputation,” Neal said.
“We have done a lot of work over the years to improve the quality of the services here that we provide, and the emergency room is a very much-needed improvement for our patients,” Holyoke Medical Center CEO Spiros Hatiras said.
In 2015, more than 42,000 patients visited the emergency department at Holyoke Medical Center.
Construction on the new building started in November. It is on schedule, and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2017.
